Students can design their own life form with the BAMZOOKi creature creator. Download the Zook Kit and build anything from creepy monsters to virtual pets.

It is possible to check out who has the fastest, strongest and most agile Zooks in the Ultimate Zook League, or exchange tips and chat with other Zooksters on the CBBC Games Messageboard.

On first impressions Bamzooki may seem quite basic but there is a level of complexity to it that would suit KS2 or KS3 students.

Blender is the very popular free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License. It is a very complex environment and only recommended for KS4 students and above.

LEGO Digital Designer, or LDD, is a free computer program produced by the LEGO Group as a part of LEGO Design byME. It is available for Mac and Windows platforms. The program allows users to build models using virtual LEGO bricks, in a computer-aided design like manner.

GIMP is a multi-platform photo manipulation tool. GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. The GIMP is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo retouching, image composition, and image construction.

GIMP has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

One of The GIMP’s strengths is its free availability from many sources for many operating systems. It is not as good as Adobe Photoshop, but it’s a lot cheaper so is a good alternative if your budget doesn’t stretch far enough.

Paper Critters is an online application for creating and sharing digital paper toys, designed and developed by JR Fabito.

A nice exercise for KS2 or KS3 students.

Sumo Paint is a free online Flash-based image editor created in 2007. It is very similar to Photoshop, in that it features many of the same tools, but Sumo Paint is geared towards illustration, where other software such as Photoshop are more suited for heavy image editing.
